La IA és una merda com una catedral

Llegir articles en blogs personals sobre la IA dient que és una eina molt útil i no-sé-què em fa posar malalt. A les persones que escriviu aquesta mena d’històries ridícules: feu vergonya. Esteu menjant cul de les grans tecnològiques i poc més. Teniu fe però cap coneixement, i a sobre ens voleu vendre que en sabeu més que la resta o que teniu la clau de l'èxit: sou la representació humana de la venda de fum la IA, i per això us ha atrapat i la reproduïu. Sou exactament l'objectiu d'aquesta competició de veure qui demostra ser més imbècil, i us asseguro que esteu guanyant. Us penseu que la IA és una entitat supercomplexa, però sou com el vell que trobava un misteri en com funcionava el DVD mentre que el nen el programava sense dificultats. Però no vull escriure aquest article només per insultar, sinó per a també afegir potser una mica d’informació al debat.

Us explicaré la meva experiència personal. Treballo desenvolupant software i, per desgràcia per a mi i tots els meus companys, també treballo desenvolupant “AI first products” o el que sigui que signifiqui. Recordeu allò del “bio”, “eco” o qualsevol altra etiqueta de l'estil que feia vendre? Bé, això és exactament igual. A la meva feina tenim eines que fan el mateix (i molt millor) que la "IA" que hem desenvolupat, però ara la tendència és que tot estigui en un xat. Doncs tal com ens han demanat hem fet que aquestes eines estiguin accessibles al xat. Els clients flipen i diuen hòstia, quina eina més guapa la IA, però quan van a l'altra pantalla que fa exactament el mateix (de fet, millor) els hi sembla tot massa ordinari per a comentar-ho.

Amb els xatbots generalistes ha passat alguna cosa semblant, en comptes de buscar a Google i passar un minut discernint entre el que t’interessa i el que no, ara reps una informació en deu segons que no pots comparar amb altres resultats i que si no és el que esperes (perquè ja saps una mica del tema i entens que allò no té gaire sentit) t'embarques en una espiral de preguntes i respostes, i fins i tot acusacions (“això d’on ho treus??”, “Ai perdona m’ho he inventat tens raó”, etc.) amb una màquina. És com parlar amb una paret d'una habitació buida i esperar que retorni quelcom diferent de l'eco de la nostra veu.

Sent realistes això d'adaptar un programari ja produït a què sigui accessible en un xat amb la IA són poques hores de feina i ho tens enllestit. Una vegada fet, ja ens podem posar l'etiqueta i tots contents (clients i empresa). Però on afecta de veritat aquesta campanya de màrqueting i on comproves que ha funcionat molt bé és al dia a dia de la meva feina. Fa uns deu anys que programo, i uns cinc que reviso codi d'altres habitualment, i mai de la vida havia corregit tantes línies de codi que no serveixen per a res. És greu fins al punt que jo he deixat de programar molts dies només per a corregir codi escrit per la IA, ja que generava problemes greus de seguretat i rendiment. Això que la IA ens fa guanyar temps és una mentida gegant que no només s'han empassat tots els empresaris sense excepció, sinó que a més repeteixen sense parar.

Per política d'empresa jo he d'utilitzar la IA diàriament. Tinc un "agent" que suposadament ha de fer el codi per mi o ajudar-me bastant en les meves tasques. També suposadament usem els LLM més potents que existeixen, i paguem una pasta per a tenir-los. A més tenim cursos que han costat molts milers d'euros que ens han ajudat a saber exactament com funciona tot aquest merder i com fer que treballi de la forma més precisa i eficient possible. I amb tot i això no podria dir un sol moment que la IA m'hagi ajudat d'una forma ràpida i eficaç. Quan pot funcionar millor és quan s'han de copiar i enganxar fitxers canviant un nom, però fins i tot en aquests casos és tan lenta que ho faig jo més ràpid i m'asseguro no haver de fer correccions.

La inversió que s'està fent ara mateix en IA a la meva empresa supera en anys llum qualsevol inversió feta en formació i contractació. Això vol dir que si hi havia 100.000 € anuals que es podien convertir en dues persones noves contractades amb un bon sou, ara amb el mateix import tenim una subscripció de lliure accés a una IA que genera problemes constantment. Però evidentment això era un exemple, la realitat és que estem parlant de quantitats molt més grans, de desenes de milions d'euros invertits a vendre fum només a la meva empresa. És a dir, de centenars de persones que es podrien contractar amb aquests diners per a desenvolupar projectes interessants, que serien molt més hàbils que aquesta eina feixuga i poc precisa, que no sabrem mai quan funcionarà bé i que té costos molt més alts que les persones.

Que la IA generarà nous llocs de treball és mentida. La inversió feta clarament apunta que la major part del pressupost està destinat ara mateix a l'estètica, a l'embolcall del producte, i no als treballadors. Els que estem a dins dels negocis de la tecnologia ho veiem ben clar, el que diuen els empresaris i el que sentim els que estem utilitzant-la diàriament canvia completament.

No vull ni entrar en ecologismes, control social, seguretat en general, problemes de salut mental, venda de dades, problemes en l'aprenentatge, privacitat, recursos necessaris, escassetat de peces essencials per a la computació, monopolis, drets d'autor... la llista és massa llarga. Jo, amb aquest petit article, només volia dir que la IA és una merda com una catedral.

Free music for all

In the last months I have been struggling finding a place to upload my music. A digital town where I can have control of my data, where I am not a product but just a musician sharing their work. That's how I started to read about the ActivityPub protocol and slowly learnt how to successfully implement it.

Introduction

There’s too many reasons to create a platform that would share music in the Fediverse. Right now the best known options to do so outside the federated community are Spotify, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, and YouTube. Bandcamp, from all of these, is the lesser known and used, but with a very simple (and a bit old-styled) user interface it covers everything a final user needs. And what are these needs?

Upload music for free.
Group tracks into albums.
Allow downloading the music.
Add info to each track and album (title, lyrics, credits, cover…)
Create a unique website for each artist that displays all their music and that is (partly) customizable.
Users can be artists, labels or just users (just users mean they can like/bookmark music, follow artists, labels, etc).
Allow searching albums, songs, artists or labels.

Fedicamp as an alternative

In this article all these basic specifications are very well explained. I share all the objectives with what's exposed there. I got the name “Fedicamp” from the same article, that at least temporarily, works fine for the project. And after reading and thinking about Fedicamp I started to structure a bit more the idea of making something like Bandcamp, but being part of the Fediverse. We should also be able to implement RSS and help a community of musicians that just wants to upload music. We don’t want to give all our tracks to evil companies that profit off our free labor in exchange of a simple hosting system.

Why not Bandwagon.fm?

There’s a decent alternative that it seems it was born from the idea of that article too. It is Bandwagon.fm. I am using it, it is the best we have so far! The platform works more or less okay, it does everything it should but it is actually a demo of a Fediverse framework that allows you to create federated apps for people who do not want to have much knowledge of ActivityPub. This makes this project hard to scale, since the code is not focused on music sharing and the developers are focused in two products instead of one.

Their appraoach needs a lot of time and pending work to feel like a finished product. It is a long way to do a product like that! But their structure makes the path a bit longer.

Also there are differences in the objectives of the project. Bandwagon is already implementing a Stripe payment gateway in a very early production stage. The idea is nice! I like that artists can get some money from their works. But Stripe is a pretty fucked up company that also charges a lot of money to the final users and Bandwagon had SO MANY features to improve or be released way before adding payment integrations. I would not add payment integrations to Fedicamp, or at least, not while the product still needs a lot of improvement.

I just want to upload the music of my bands and let others listen to it for free. For those who are more enthusiastic I want them to be able to run their instance that would be connected to mine. Nothing different than a Mastodon server in that part, no external companies, no ads, no payments. And, why not, we need that software to able to read and send music from/to Bandwagon.fm! So… we still need a Fedicamp I guess?

Status of the project

Fedicamp is a project that is still in a very early stage of development. From the specifications listed above so far I have none, because besides offering all that the software has to be readable, maintenable, scalable, secure and up to date on current technologies. And even having some code working fine it still lacks all these layers to be a real life production software.

The first step is to create Artists that can upload Albums with Tracks and that they can be shared on ActivityPub. Actually this was done today! Next steps is listing albums of the server, or only people that you follow (in the style of Mastodon, that you can see toots from people you follow, from the server or global).

Right now I am using SQLite but I’ll migrate to Postgre, and the cache that right now is in memory at some point it will be managed by Redis. Maybe the queues too. I have to think about a system to upload files (and consume them) efficiently and to implement a serie of security policies. Finally I also want to implement an ORM (right now I’m testing some) and a migration system for the database.

Probably in the way to get all this I will want to try to deploy it and test it or let someone test it. Deploying smoothly such a complex system will be also a big part of the project. We will see if I can arrive somewhere soon, I’ll keep you updated!
